Export Qwality

‘Export Qwality’—a series of eight separate quilts—are made with translucent red chiffon, veiling the objects inside the quilt. The quilts track India’s interaction with the West through trade from the silk route to the current H-1 visa labor market and through the evolution of the spice trade. For each quilt, I used a commodity that is exported from India (some literal, some conceptual) and a spice that is from India; the spices used are chronologically placed in the order in which they came into Western contact beginning with pepper and ending with “curry powder.”
